Très très bon également: "Catch The Wind" (Donovan), "You're My World", une adaptation d'une chanson italienne, et "Love Me As Though There Were No Tomorrow". Not a Jim Webb song to be heard but not an ounce of filler either on this essential Glen Campbell album. And what classics they are: the John Hartford title cut, Donovan's "Catch The Wind," Nilsson's "Without Her," Orbison's "Cryin'," Rod McKuen's "The World I Used To Know," and that's just a few of the timeless classics on offer here carried by Campbell's distinctive tenor that has rarely sounded better.Ĭampbell's work is usually showcased by a series of "Best Of" albums but that is to ignore the excellence of some of his main releases back in his most productive period, the Sixties. This 2001 re-release benefits from digital remastering and the crystalline sound gives these classic songs a new life that sound as though they could have been recorded yesterday. It was Al DeLory that worked with him to produce that beguiling country pop sound that sold records by the million. When Campbell signed to Capitol Records in the Sixties he was playing bluegrass instrumentals but he wanted to break away from that. The rest is history!Ĭheck out the top 5 cover versions of Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind”.That winning team of Glen Campbell, arranger and producer Al DeLory and some of the Sixties finest songwriters scored again with this terrific album, probably Glen Campbell's finest, from 1968. Turns out, the producer absolutely loved the recording, so he just took out Campbell’s instructions and released it. In between stanzas and lyrics, he would yell instructions to the band members. He got his band together in the studio to record “Gentle On my Mind” as a demo to pitch to his producer. At the time, he had a recording contract with Capital Records, but wasn’t too famous in the public eye yet. “Gentle On My Mind” was originally written and recorded by John Hartford, but has been covered by many talented musicians, most famously by Campbell.Ĭampbell first heard Hartford’s version on the radio and knew he needed to record it. The song won Campbell two Grammy Awards for the Best Country and Western Solo Vocal Performance, Male and Best Country and Western Recording. It became the theme song for his variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from 1969-1972. Glen Campbell released “Gentle On my Mind” in 1967 as the sole single from his album of the same name.
